Why free software?

As technology becomes ever more influential in our lives, understanding free software is crucial to personal liberty. With very few exceptions, proprietary/closed source software surrenders liberties to third parties often without our realizing it.

Free and Open Source software and hardware offer us flexibility and liberty through transparency. When one considers just how much personal information is is on a phone, a computer, or even a lightbulb, the relationship between personal liberty and technology starts to become clear. There may be times when closed source or proprietary software may even work against our objectives. In those cases concepts like DAPS become absolutely essential for private correspondence, economic competitiveness, and personal liberty.

In this video, Richard Stallman, MacArthur-Award-winner, freedom activist, and founder of the Free Software Foundation, discusses the importance of Free Software and the 4 Freedoms.
